Scooters below 250cc: Always use "Scooter Mode" on Google Maps. If your app doesn't have it, use "Car Mode" but select "Avoid Tolls" and "Avoid Motorways/Highways" in settings.
Navigation for 250cc+ Scooters: Set Google Maps to "Car Mode" and choose "Avoid Tolls". You are allowed on Expressways (Red/Yellow signs) but NOT National Highways (Green Plum signs).
▶ Click to Watch: Google Maps Settings Video⚠️ Wrong Road Access: Fines for entering prohibited roads range from NT$3,000 – NT$6,000 (~$95 – $190 USD) plus towing fees.
Access depends strictly on your scooter's engine size and the shape of the road signs:
In Taiwan, scooters with White Plates (<250cc) are generally not permitted to make direct left turns at large intersections. Look for the blue circular sign with a scooter and two arrows.
Fine for incorrect turn: NT$600 (~$19 USD). Large bikes (Yellow/Red plates) turn left directly like cars.
Mandatory Alerts: By law (Article 7-2), authorities must place an alert sign 100m–300m (City) or 300m–1000m (Highways) before a camera. Always watch for the Camera Sign Board and the red/yellow characters painted on the road.
10 km/h over limit: ~Fines for overspeeding (1–20 km/h over the limit) are NT$1,200 (~$40 USD) if you are riding a scooter below 250cc or NT$1,600 (~$50 USD) if you are riding a scooter or motorcycle above 250cc. If you are caught riding more than 20 km/h but less than 40 km/h over the limit, the fine increases to NT$2,000 (~$63 USD) for all engine sizes.
Jumping a Red Light: NT$2,000 (~$63 USD)
Crossing Double Solid Lines: Strictly Prohibited. Fine: NT$600–NT$1,800 (~$19–$57 USD).
Exceeding the limit by over 40 km/h is Dangerous Driving. If caught by a cop or roadside camera, the license plate is suspended on the spot and the vehicle cannot be ridden.
*This is why Taiwan rental companies often require deposits of $3,000 – $4,000 USD. Owners must explain misconduct to the Motor Vehicle Office and are held responsible for safety.
Alcohol & DUI: The legal limit is 0.15 mg/L. One drink can get you caught. Police conduct inspections day and night. DUI penalties: up to NT$500,000 (~$15,800 USD), immediate license suspension, and criminal charges.
Mobile Phone Usage: Prohibited even at traffic signals. Fine: NT$1,200 (~$38 USD). Use a mount for navigation and do not touch the screen while riding.
Lane Usage: Ride in outer lanes. Never cross double solid lines. Look for "No Scooters" (禁行機車) on inner lanes. Never ride on sidewalks or car-only lanes.
Fueling: All scooters use 92 or 95 Octane gas. If you cannot open the gas cap, ask station staff for help to avoid breaking the key.
Parking Regulations: Scooters below 250cc must use white scooter parking boxes. Motorcycles above 250cc must use car parking spaces. Do not follow local illegal parking habits; you will still be fined NT$600+ or towed. This fine often exceeds the cost of an entire month of legal parking.
